Fish Stocks
The lake contains approximately 2 tonne of carp, about 200 fish. Half of this weight comprises
carp of the fast growing Czechoslovakian ‘Royale’ Strain, supplied by premier French fish dealer
Simon Horton. These big framed fish, mostly mirrors, are gorgeous specimens which have made
huge weight gains since they were stocked in the winter of 2006/2007. We now have a good head
of mid 30’s to upper 40’s, we hope to boast a 50lb carp very soon.

The other tonne of carp is made up of locally sourced fish, native to the area, that have been in
the lake for many years, we refer to these as ‘ the originals’. These are predominantly long lean
commons and some of the specimens may be over 35 years old. The majority of these fish are
doubles but some lovely 20lb plus mirrors and commons were banked in 2007 and 2008 by
our customers. The biggest carp recorded from the original stock is a 30lb 13oz mirror to a Dutch
angler. The originals are very quick to show themselves in hot weather, in the spring of 2006
we counted 145 carp in one corner of the lake, basking in the sun on the surface.
With favourable weather conditions and good angling we are very much a ‘ runs water’, with
plenty of carp of all sizes.

In January 2007, 6 catfish were introduced to the lake. 2 of these fish are now well over
50lb and the others are catching up fast. The cats have settled in very well and are putting on
1lb in weight a month
Sweet Chestnut Lake has not been emptied for over 20 years and currently supports a
healthy range of fish species, in addition to the Carp and Catfish. These include Tench, Pike,
Zander, Perch, Chub, Roach, Rudd, Wild Trout and Pumpkinseed.
The lake is free of Poisson Chat and problem Crayfish

We will be offering a 20kg free bait deal for the 2008 season.
